Fairlead Rollers for Mooring Lines

A Smarter Solution for Modern Mooring Lines

Across the marine industry, operators are transitioning from traditional nylon and polyester mooring lines to advanced patented Dyneema® rope systems. These next‑generation lines offer major advantages:

  • Extremely lightweight
  • Does not absorb water
  • Floats on the surface
  • Stronger than steel wire of the same diameter
  • Significantly reduced snap-back risk

But with these benefits comes a higher price—and a critical vulnerability. Dyneema lines cannot be spliced on board if damaged, meaning a single fray can render a costly, high‑performance line unusable.

The Hidden Cause of Line Damage

Most mooring line failures originate from friction and abrasion caused by steel fairlead rollers. Over time, steel rollers become rusted, pitted, jagged, or impossible to rotate.

Crew members often attempt to free stuck rollers using wire ropes and mooring winches, but this approach is risky and only provides temporary relief. The result: preventable damage to premium mooring lines.

A Proven Upgrade: Maintenance-Free Composite Rollers

For more than eight years, Shipwright Marine Services has delivered a reliable, long‑term solution—maintenance‑free fairlead roller replacements engineered to protect today’s high‑value mooring systems. With over 500 units in service, our upgrade has become a trusted choice across the industry.

Why Our Rollers Outperform Steel

Our rollers are manufactured in the USA by Columbia Industrial Products Inc. using a patented composite material that delivers exceptional performance:

  • Solid construction rated to 15,500 psi
  • Self-lubricating for smooth, consistent rotation
  • UV-resistant and water-resistant
  • Lightweight – only 68lbs (compared to 320 lbs for steel)
  • Corrosion-free, eliminating rust and pitting
  • Compatible with aerosol paint for custom finishing

Each roller is paired with an annealed stainless-steel shaft, ensure long-term, maintenance-free rotation.

Operational Note: Mooring Line Tension Limits

Summary of observed issue

Two separate vessels reported non‑rotating fairlead rollers while fitted with our composite replacements. In both cases a Shipwright Technician found the mooring lines were tensioned so tightly that the rollers could not turn.

Manufacturer guidance and recommended practice

After consulting with the engineers at Dyneema®, the following operational guidance is recommended: run mooring lines at an average of about 20% of the line’s rated safe working load (SWL) and do not exceed 30% of SWL during normal mooring. Sustained loading in the 30–40% range can prevent fairlead rollers from rotating and will accelerate wear on the roller surface and shaft.

Protect Your Lines. Reduce Risk. Extend Service Life.

Upgrading to Shipwright Marine Services composite fairlead rollers is a simple, cost‑effective way to safeguard your investment in Dyneema mooring lines and improve crew safety.
